Mitchell for Obama

Members of the Mitchell County women’s Democratic Party woke up at 5 a.m. to make the trip to Asheville to see Obama.
It’s hard living in a county that is 80 percent Republican, said Christine Purdy.
“People are afraid to put a bumper sticker on their car,” she said.
While Purdy has been an Obama supporter since he spoke at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, the group’s president, Jan Hamilton, voted for Hillary Clinton in the primary. But she has become an Obama convert.
“He’s in it for 98 percent (of Americans) of which I belong,” she said.

Partners for Obama
Allison Bovee and her life partner, Mary Vogel, drove an hour and a half from Bakersville to attend the rally. Next to the Obama buttons attached to their T-shirts were tie-dye buttons with the word “hippie” written on them.
“We are just really excited to be around like-minded people,” Bovee said about attending the rally in Asheville.
Although she wished Obama supported more of the causes that were important to her, like same sex marriage, she still thought he was the best candidate for president and was enthusiastic about the election.
“Let me put it this way, I haven’t been this excited about an election since 1972 or so,” Bovee said. “I don’t agree with everything Obama has to say, but I think he’s an intelligent person, and I think he has principles, and he knows how to think.”
